Medical Students

The Emory University School of Medicine has an innovative, comprehensive palliative care education program in which all third-year medical students complete a one-week rotation in palliative medicine. Some elements of the rotation include:

  • Bedside teaching rounds
  • Small-group, patient-based learning
  • Interdisciplinary inpatient hospice care
  • Interactive lectures

Electives and tailored experiences are available to medical students at any level to enrich their exposure and competency in core hospice and palliative care skills.

Residents & Rotating Fellows

Emory residents and fellows have the opportunity for a a rich training experience in palliative medicine. Working with Emory Palliative Care Center faculty, residents and rotating fellows will observe and practice skills through palliative care consultations.

Upon completion of the rotation, trainees will better understand the unique skillset of the palliative care practitioner and our model of interdisciplinary patient care. Importantly, they will learn about psychosocial and spiritual suffering and how best to communicate with the severely ill and their families. Residents and fellows will recognize the potential of palliative medicine to improve the quality of life for seriously ill patients through the alleviation of pain and other symptoms.

Required rotations are offered to trainees in the following programs:

  • Internal Medicine
