Zach is the Associate Director of Research Programs and Innovation at the Emory Palliative Care Center. His interests revolve around methods for improving end-of-life care in the U.S. and abroad. Specifically he is interested in (a) strategies (at the organization, local, state or national levels) for expanding the utilization of palliative care and hospice services in the last months of life and (b) how such an expansion can positively influence quality of care while potentially reducing costs. His current work includes analyses of how palliative care can reduce readmissions and fit in to the emerging landscape of value-based healthcare, as well as projects in the fields of spiritual care, supportive oncology, dedicated inpatient hospice units, heart failure and critical care.

Zach received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago in the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine in 2008 with a thesis on insurance coverage of hospice care in the United States. He then began his career in healthcare as a cancer technology consultant for hospitals and health systems before earning an MPH in Epidemiology at Emory’s School of Public Health in 2013.

He specifically welcomes inquiries from clinicians, students, and others interested in furthering the mission of palliative care at Emory and beyond via email (
